Each year Kyoto Maiko wear different kanzashi for July's Gion Matsuri festival. In 2010 the design featured dancing fan with colourful flowers and silver water swirls.
This is a mini version of the full maiko kanzashi.
The flowers were made following traditional Japanese art called tsumami hana kanzashi. This means that every petal is starched and hand dyed. Each of them is cut out of silk in the square shape, then folded and assembled to form a single petal. I strive to be as accurate to the traditional way of making kanzashi, so I always use habutae silk and rice glue.
